Like a teen sitting up all night watching his favorite rock band, that’s what I precisely did yesterday morning 12:15 AM onwards watching Swedish “folktronica” band Wintergatan live. In fact yesterday I watched their Rockpalast live video and today another of their live shows which are just incredibly good. Just cannot believe how a band can become an obsession as this. It all started with the freakish looking manually operated gadget in a YouTube video called “Marble Machine” that plays music, operated by a single person. I even recall clicking it once and got disinterested in it after a few seconds. On Saturday night I let the video play a little longer. As soon as the drum beats started kicking in I was lured. I look for at their songs and Thank God I clicked on “Sommarfagel” from the recommendations. One listen and I am hooked. In fact “Sommarfagel” is their very first song from their very first album (from way back in 2013) and it’s the one I have listened to and watched live the most. So going chronologically like I did, start with the “Marble Machine” video and then move on to “Sommarfagel” where the Band is also introduced. And if you are hooked like me, check out their live performances. You’ll be surprised how instrumental music can get you hooked for over an hour without tiring you one bit. An absolute-must-watch.
This first video of theirs also showcases the skill and ingenuity of the band members who create these machines that play music. The band members are super talented considering the number of instruments each band member plays. Also included in their list of instruments are typewriters, music boxes that read punch card type of reels besides others. Next move on to the official video of Sommarfagel.
And now for the live performances. Wintergatan provides links to downloads of their audio and of the audio of their concerts as this one. Would love to bring this band to India. Meanwhile, Enjoy!
And the beautifully made video from their Rockpalast performance of Sommarfagel which has become my daily morning tonic these days. Jump to 8:35 for the performance.
